A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia buried in a coffin made with mushroom material. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald reported the news on September 7.
The coffin is built from mycelium, the thread-like web of fungi. It degrades rapidly and feeds the soil. People in the funeral industry say that more Australians are now looking for greener funeral options, instead of standard graves or cremation.
